Jess and Jules
Jess and Jules are a duo that runs a unique company that design and create playful and bright fabrics and furniture for clients, based in the UK. Jess and Jules came to our university to talk to us about their business and gave us an insight in to how an independent interiors company works.
In the talk Jess and Jules explained how licensing works for their company as they have three freelance designers that work for their company.
Jess and Jules receive the designs.
They review the designs to see if they will suit and fit in with their views and
company, these are some of the things they consider when choosing.
What would they look like on the fabrics they usually print on?
Do they work in different colourways?
What would a customer use it for?
Then they agree to a license agreement, which usually last up to two years.
After they have decided to use the design they then test it on fabrics to see what fabric it would suit better.
Then a price point is agreed.
A marketing campaign is put in to place.
The marketing campaign involves studio photography and lifestyle photography.
Then the website is updated with the images of the design.
Swatches are then created to send to potential customers and clients.
Social media plays a big part in the marketing campaign as well, as many of Jess and Jules customers follow many of their social media pages, for example instagram.
Then PR press, this is where images of the design with Jess and Jules company name on it are put in to magazines that are aimed at their customers.
And then it can take up to three to four months for the first sale to appear.
And when a sale happens the designer gets paid every thirty days with their loyalty fees.
I’m not saying all companies do it exactly like this but it gives a good idea of how the license agreement works, as I never knew how it worked within a company. But after seeing how it works for Jess and Jules it makes me feel more confident of maybe going off and starting my own company or working for companies like Jess and Jules.
