Harriet Popham

Harriet Popham is a wonderful designer who attended my university to speak about her time as a freelance designer. Harriet is currently a freelance illustrator who specialises in stitch and print. Harriet designs are aimed for interior textiles. Harriet has also released a colouring book called the Great British Bake-off.

These were Harriet’s top tips when it came to her experience when working with clients.

  • Learn to take a deposit when a client request a design, that can take you months to research and design, in case they drop the design at the last minute.

  • Don’t underestimate your skills, because they chose you because they like your style of work.

  • Learn to not let people take advantage of you. If the clients are giving you an unrealistic amount of work to get done by an unrealistic deadline, tell them and say they need to rethink what they are making you do.

  • Learn to say yes to clients who might not be the obvious choice for your style; you’ll learn something new and gain new connections from the experience.

  • And last but not least be professional and positive.

I hope these tips are useful for those of you out there that want to be a freelance designer. I myself am not sure if I want to be a freelance designer yet as it seems quiet scary.
